That Cosmopolitan Girl, 1887

Here is what the well-dressed modern young woman might have been wearing under her fashionable dress in the late 1880s. And these undergarments are both hygienic and artistic - a winning combination indeed!

Mrs Fletcher's rival, Mrs. E.M. Van Brunt, was the subject of an earlier post here (hence the link!).

I am trying to imagine what exactly a Breakfast Corset would have been like. Was it looser, so you could eat pancakes? And Corselettes were to be worn at the seaside under your bathing costume, apparently. Wait at least an hour after breakfast before you change into the Corselette, though.

This advertisement is from an 1887 Cosmopolitan magazine (way before the Helen Gurley Brown era).

I know a couple of people that should go to a dress reform parlor! :) Just go to the mall and you'll see several!

grouse and badger - They ought to open these parlors right in the malls!

I have to laugh, This is the first that I've heard of a breakfast corset. What did the men in their life think of all this style?
And I can't imagine how one went into the pool or ocean with a corset under the bathing suit. Did they just sit under an umbrella and feel the breeze and take in the smell of the salt air, and listen to the seagulls. Imagine.

That is just too cute. Imagine the problems of going skinny dipping. Everyone would be finished before you were undressed.(grin)

Grace - I believe the idea was that ladies waded in up to their knees. As for breakfast, I think corsets are the last thing that should be involved.

Grampy - I guess back in the 19th century it took everyone hours to get ready! :)

I am really curious about these breakfast corsets.

Bill - So am I. Maybe they were looser? If I find a good ad for them, hey presto! we've got another post :)
